Liams RIH
Af en toe ontvangen we post uit een exotische locatie. Zo hadden we al eens Nederlandse fietsen in Amerika en in Thailand. In Australië rijdt Liam op een bijzondere RIH, zoals hij hieronder vertelt.
“i was obviously disappointed to find that the makers of my bicycle are no longer in business, because that meant i could not find any further information about the history of it.
i do not know much about it at all but i will send you some pictures and the little i know, it may be useful for your resources at some stage in the future
I purchased it in 2010 from a friend who was working as a bike courier in Melbourne. He had been working on it when someone opened a car door which he collided with. the frame was badly damaged, but because of its age and difficulty to value an equivalent replacement the insurance company of the car driver chose to have it repaired by Paconi in melbourne. the down tube was replaced and the main frame was resprayed a slightly different red from original, including over the chromed rear stays for some reason unknown.
I purchased it from him after the repairs. I believe that he purchased it from a track racer in Sydney, Australia which is where the story of it having been raced in a commonwealth games originates. I am not sure of the truth of this as it seems that it has had many owners between then and now.
the frame number is 317A on the headtube and 25 on the bottom bracket, the dropouts are stamped Campagnolo and the stickers on the fork indicate 531 tubing, The number would seem to indicate the first year of production at Fongers as i interpret it.
the first two pictures are of it in my possession, the last attached picture is of it while owned by the courier. as you can see, it has a very classic track geometry which is still appealing.
thank you for your time and effort involved in running your website and gathering information”

More about RIH (in English)
Nice RIH! 1st time I see a Fongers-RIH track. I would think it is from 1970.
thanks Mel, the fongers site does indicate the number is a 1970 one. I asked at the jordaan rih shop when in amsterdam a month ago, and was told it was a 60’s number, but i do think the bike is more modern in style, so 1970 is a nice midpoint.
